Radiohead May Drop "Chemical Weapon"

Now that Radiohead has parted with EMI, the band's next album may not come out on a major label, frontman Thom Yorke tells the L.A. Times.

"We have two or three options, and that's one," the singer told the paper before his band's two performances beginning tonight at L.A.'s Greek Theatre. "We haven't discussed it a great deal. I would love for us to drop a chemical weapon within the music industry. But I don't see it as our responsibility, either."

Yorke's own solo album, 'The Eraser,' may pave the way: It comes out July 10 on indie label XL. Initially conceived as a typically dense electronic project, Yorke says he surprised himself with the accessibility of the end result. "In the midst of it all there were two or three things that made [producer] Nigel [Godrich] and me go, 'Ooh, there's something really direct here. Someone might even understand it the first time around.'"

Art Brut Petition for 'Top of the Pops'

With the recent news that England's 42-year-old music show 'Top of the Pops' will take its final bow next month, fans of suave indie combo Art Brut are leading a campaign to get the group on the show.

The petition, located here, was started by fans aware of the band's adoration for the program. Frontman Eddie Argos actually wrote a song called 'Top of the Pops,' but has since folded it into the live version of current U.S. single 'Good Weekend.'

"I'm obsessed with 'Top of the Pops,'" Argos tells AOL Music. "I used to watch it before I went to [childhood scout program] Cubs. It was my highlight of the week."

With more than 3,000 signatures, the band hopes to live the dream before the last new show is taped July 30.

"People did some of their best performances on 'Top of the Pops,'" Argos recalls. "Belle and Sebastian did some amazing things, like one half of the band stood still while the other half rocked out. You could see archive footage on David Bowie. I don't really like Nirvana, but even Nirvana on TOTP was amazing."

Though the band heads to America for Brooklyn's Siren festival next month, they're ready with a spirited set should the BBC come calling.

Be Your Own Pet Leave Country Behind

Though they hail from Nashville, don't expect the teens in Be Your Own Pet to admit a love for the music of their hometown. According to fiery frontwoman Jemina Pearl, their punked-up, self-titled debut was in part a reaction to growing up in a town fond of modern country crooners.

"I love Elvis and Johnny Cash and all that stuff," Pearl says. "But country music today? It's just crap. There's nothing to it at all. It's all the same song."

Bassist Nathan Vasquez says his band mates had a lot of love growing up for all things Seattle, while his personal music diet extended to alt-rockers Tool.

"I listened to a whole bunch of 'Lateralus,'" Vasquez says. "I was big into that record when I was in middle school. They were, like, my first stadium rock concert experience. Me and my friend drove down to Birmingham to see them."

These days it's Be Your Own Pet -- Vasquez, Pearl guitarist Jonas Stein and drummer Jamin Orrall -- that fans are driving great distances to see. The hotly tipped act is tearing up stages during the final two weeks of its latest U.S. tour, which wraps up July 1 in L.A.

Despite the band's aversion to modern country, don't expect these punks to take up residence in New York City anytime soon.

"This is where all our families live and where all of our friends pretty much live," Pearl says. "Every once in a while it's like, 'Oh, I just want to get out of this town.' But we travel enough, so it makes me appreciate Nashville a little more."

Sleater-Kinney Taking 'Indefinite Hiatus'

After 11 years together, veteran indie rockers Sleater-Kinney will be going on an "indefinite hiatus" following a handful of summer shows, including a performance at Lollapalooza on Aug. 4.

"We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years," the band said. "We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us. But mostly we want to extend our gratitude to our amazing fans. You have been a part of our story from the beginning. We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion and loyalty. It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile."

The Olympia, WA trio -- vocalist/guitarist Corin Tucker, guitarist Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss -- are one of the enduring acts from the early '90s riot grrrl movement. The band released their latest effort, 'The Woods,' last year.

The Zutons Shaking Hands With the Who

Kicking off their 2006 world tour last week, the Who may be more than 40 years old, but don't think they're out of touch.

After playing the O2 Wireless festival this past weekend in Leeds, England, guitarist Pete Townsend extended an offer to one of the event's support acts, quirky pop rockers the Zutons.

"He asked us if we want to play a song with them or have a jam," Zutons frontman Dave McCabe tells AOL Music. "We said yeah!"

Fond of the Internet, Townsend's offer will find him playing with the Liverpool group in the coming weeks via a webcast. "It's gonna get filmed at our gig in Bristol [June 28] or London [July 2]," McCabe says. "We're going to play 'Mary-Ann With the Shaky Hand' with them."

The Zutons are wrapping up some solo U.K. tour dates before hitting the European festival circuit this summer. Following a well-received second stage performance at Coachella last May, the band return to the U.S. this fall in support of their second album, 'Tired of Hanging Around,' due out Sept. 19.

Oasis Singer Chases Ghosts With Paltrow

Oasis singer Liam Gallagher has had a few run-ins with ghosts in his London pad, so who's he gonna call?

Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gallagher, who lives with his fiance and their four-year-old son, has sought the help of the Oscar-winning actress -- and wife of Coldplay singer Chris Martin -- who previously hired a Kabbalah priest to rid her home of "bad energy."

The singer is also said to be looking for a new home . . . just in case.

Pixies Out of Magic Dust

Pixies frontman Frank Black says he tried to write new music about six months ago for the reformed band, but the songs came out "kind of fakey."

Fans have been clamoring for new music from the wildly influential alt-rock group since its reformation two years ago, but Black told Billboard it may not be in the cards. "Sometimes I wish I could just spit out some Pixies-esque songs, but it doesn't really work that way," he said. "You write the songs and they come out the way they come out."

Lately, Black's solo songs have been coming out rootsy, in a lopsided, Frank Black-sorta way. Both the brand-new double album 'Fast Man Raider Man' and last year's 'Honeycomb' were recorded in Nashville with many of that city's stalwart session men.

As for the Pixies, they've released just two new songs since reuniting -- Kim Deal's 'Bam Thwok,' an iTunes exclusive, and 'Ain't That Pretty at All,' a Warren Zevon cover for the 2004 tribute album 'Enjoy Every Sandwich.' The Pixies will head to Europe next month for a few festival appearances and in August, Black will support the Foo Fighters on a handful of North American dates.

Doherty's Diaries Getting Unlocked

More than 20 volumes of embattled rocker Pete Doherty's personal journals, which include details of his drug use, career and relationship with supermodel Kate Moss, have been acquired by a British publishing house and will be released in March 2007.

The diaries of the Babyshambles frontman, 27, include drawings, photos, film reviews and poems dating back to 1999, when the once-anonymous rocker fronted punk band the Libertines. "Some of it is quite funny," said Ian Preece, Orion Publishing's commissioning editor. "But some of it is very, very dark."

Doherty (pictured at far right) was fined $1900 in Sweden last week after police found cocaine in his system following a Babyshambles performance at the Hultsfred music festival. Ironically, the rocker had checked himself into rehab two weeks earlier.

Brazilian Girls Dropping a 'Bomb'

The Brazilian Girls are neither Brazilian nor all-female. Discuss.

Such anomaly makes perfect sense given the band's sound, which is everything (punk, electronic, pop) at once. To that end, the NYC-based quartet will release the second installment of their eclectic tunes, 'Talk to La Bomb,' on Sept. 12.

For the follow-up to the Girls' 2005 eponymous debut, the band -- frontwoman Sabina Sciubba, bassist Jesse Murphy, keyboardist Didi Gutman and drummer Aaron Johnston -- entered New York's Electric Lady Studios, churning out more than a dozen tracks in just one week. Co-produced by the band, Mark Plati (David Bowie) and the Cars' Ric Ocasek (who also contributed guitars), 'Talk to La Bomb' is a glamorous concoction of cheeky humor, raucous dance nuggets and multilingual, sex-infused anthems.

But when it comes to seduction, Johnston opts for another kind of language: "Rhythm," he says.

As for working with Ocasek, Johnston says the sessions were "very simple," and adds that there was "a lot of mutual respect." Sciubba offers up her favorite Cars song ('Let's Go'), but admits she has stopped short of checking out the new incarnation of the iconic Eighties outfit, which features Todd Rundgren in place of Ocasek.

The Brazilian Girls kick off a summer tour in support of 'La Bomb' with a June 27 hometown performance before embarking on a handful of U.S. and European dates. Even with their growing exposure, Johnston remains modest when asked about the craziest thing a fan has done.

"Come to our show," he deadpans.

Teddy Geiger Goes Postal

Youthful newcomer Teddy Geiger beefed up his indie cred with a cover of the Postal Service's 'Brand New Colony' during a recent taping for the live performance series 'Stripped.' Currently on tour in Australia, Geiger escaped to the hallway during a radio show gig to tell AOL Music about getting in touch with his inner Ben Gibbard.

"I've always been a big fan of the song and I love the lyrics," says Geiger, 17, who appeared on VH1's 'In Search of the New Partridge Family' and had a recurring role on 'Love Monkey.' "I could always hear a different arrangement for it in my head. I'm pumped I got to sit on the floor and record it."

Also a big Death Cab for Cutie fan, Geiger added that he's hooked on the band's song 'Crooked Teeth.'

Band of Horses Prefer Oates

Riding high on their well-received release, 'Everything All the Time,'  Seattle's Band of Horses are well into their North American tour and quickly earning a reputation as a band with a don't-miss live show.

The band's crashing guitar arrangements and Ben Bridwell's soaring voice are enhanced live by the impossibly charming frontman's impish smile, not to mention . . . a Hall & Oates cover?

Even the hipster crowd at Maxwell's in Hoboken, N.J. was treated to a lively rendition of 'You Make My Dreams,' responding with an audience-wide singalong.

Arctic Monkey Falls From Tree

Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson, who headed home to England recently after complaining of exhaustion, has officially quit the band. Fill-in Nick O'Malley, despite a broken bone in his hand, will soldier on with the year's biggest buzz band for the forseeable future.

"We have been mates with Andy for a long time and have been through some amazing things together that no one can take away," wrote surviving Monkeys Alex Turner, Jamie Cook and Matt Helders on the group's Web site. The latest British invaders, who just finished conquering America, will be touring across Europe and Australia through August.

Editors Tackle R.E.M., Talking Heads

While Britain's Editors are still a month away from a U.S. tour that begins July 25 in Atlanta, the foursome is already preparing for the followup to 'The Back Room.'

"Hopefully we're going to take September off until the end of the year," guitarist Chris Urbanowicz says, adding that the band would like to finish the album by Christmas "if the new stuff is good enough."

They've already settled on producer Garrett Lee (U2, Snow Patrol), who worked on the re-release of  the song 'Bullets.' "The first version we put out was basically a well-mixed demo," says Urbanowicz.

The band is itching to get back in the studio. They got the bug after recording a cover of R.E.M.'s 'Orange Crush' for an album celebrating the greatest songs of the last 20 years, which will also feature Franz Ferdinand and Sugarbabe. R.E.M. was actually the Editors' second choice, after Talking Heads.

Urvabowicz says the band is saving its Talking Heads tribute for the stage, regularly performing 'Road To Nowhere' these days. "A lot of their stuff kind of encapsulates what we were doing when we first started going on tour," he says.

They haven't met any Talking Heads yet, but Urbanowicz did have a rock 'n' roll moment this past weekend when he checked out the Foo Fighters show in London's Hyde Park. "Juliette Lewis and a couple of the Killers were there, and Dave Grohl, obviously -- I met him," he said. "That was a bit weird. He's one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. I was a bit drunk and didn't want to make a fool of myself, so I kept it brief."

Dead 60s Find the Cure

The ska-infused punk rock of Liverpool's Dead 60s won fans in Rancid's Tim Armstrong and Social Distortion's Mike Ness and a slot on 2005's Warped Tour. But the band might be turning on a whole new set of, er, Deadheads after revealing that their new material is going in a different direction.

Speaking from his home in Liverpool, axeman Ben Gordon hinted the band's angular guitar lines and jarring numbers are a thing of the past. "We've gone back to basics -- picking up the guitar and writing songs with real emotion," he said. "We [were writing] very stylized, but now it's more about songs than styles."

The four-piece -- Gordon, frontman Matt McManamon, bassist Charlie Turner and drummer Bryan Jonson -- said they found their way to Cure-inspired guitar numbers after scrapping a batch of  electronic cuts penned in early 2006.  "We wrote an album's worth of stuff and went really Kraftwerk-ian," Gordon noted. "We just really wanted to experiment and went the whole nine yards, [but in the end] we wanted to write real songs. Guitar songs."

So far the Dead 60s say they have ten cuts completed, including one tentatively titled 'Losing Feeling.' The group will hit the studio, possibly in L.A. later this summer, with the aim of having record number two ready to go for early '07.

In the interim, the band will embark on a series of dates in Europe this summer. As for those Kraftwerkstyled cuts? They just might end up on B-sides when the next album is released.

Radiohead Bust Out the Classics

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke laid out the band's game plan early on in their headlining set at Bonnaroo on Saturday night saying,  "We're gonna play lots and lots of other stuff, but we're gonna play some new songs."

Radiohead offered an eager crowd a sneak peek of the album to come, along with 'OK Computer' chestnuts such as 'No Suprises,' 'Paranoid Android' and 'Karma Police.' The evening hit its emotional peak with a transcendent version of 'Fake Plastic Trees,' with the blue glow of cell phones and the flickering of thousands of lighters illuminating the darkened Tennessee sky.
